Accessibility Statement

Solar & Battery Guide aims to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Read what we have built for accessibility, known limits and how to report a barrier.

Last updated:

Solar & Battery Guide wants every homeowner to be able to read our guides and use our calculators, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, voice control or other assistive technology.

Our target

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. We treat this as the standard for new pages and features, consistent with the goals of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We are working toward full conformance and fix problems as we find them.

What we have built in

  • Structure. Pages use one H1, logical heading levels, landmarks (header, navigation, main content, footer) and a "skip to content" link.
  • Keyboard access. Menus, the search dialog, calculators, checklists and forms can be used with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator.
  • Calculators. Every input has a visible text label, units and help text. Results are written as text, not only shown in charts, and update in a region that screen readers can announce.
  • Tables. Data tables have header cells and can be scrolled sideways with the keyboard on small screens.
  • Color and contrast. Text and interface colors are chosen to meet AA contrast in both light and dark themes, and we do not use color alone to convey meaning.
  • Text resizing. The layout adapts to browser zoom up to 400% and to narrow screens without horizontal scrolling of the page.
  • Motion. We keep animation minimal and respect your system's reduced-motion setting.
  • Images. Meaningful images have text alternatives; decorative images are hidden from screen readers. Our illustrations contain no text that you would need to read.
  • Forms. The contact and newsletter forms have labels, clear error messages linked to the field, and no time limits or CAPTCHAs.
  • Language. Each page declares its language (English, Spanish or Simplified Chinese) so assistive technology pronounces it correctly.

Known limitations

We test with automated checks and manual keyboard and screen reader passes, but we may not catch everything. Areas where we know improvement may be needed:

  • Some linked external sources, such as government PDFs, are outside our control and may not be fully accessible. If you need information from one of them, contact us and we will help.
  • Complex tables in long guides can be harder to navigate on small screens with a screen reader. We add a plain-language summary before such tables where possible.

Compatibility

The site is designed to work with current versions of major browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari) on desktop and mobile, and with common screen readers including NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack. It works without JavaScript for reading guides; the calculators need JavaScript to run.

Report a barrier

If something on the site is hard or impossible for you to use, please tell us. Email or use our contact page, and include:

  • the page address;
  • what you were trying to do;
  • the device, browser and assistive technology you use, if you are comfortable sharing.

We aim to reply within 3 business days. If we cannot fix the problem quickly, we will provide the information you need in another accessible format, such as plain text by email, while we work on it.

Ongoing work

We review accessibility when we add new features and during our regular content reviews. This statement is updated when we make significant changes. It was last reviewed on the date shown at the top of this page.
